Love your output, which led me to a 224+ which I love. It runs 2x16tb IronWolf Pro and I am happy, but, have also acquired another 2x16 IronWolf Pros from someone who has changed horses and gone a different route, so was thinking of 4225+ or even 9225+ for best leverage of hdds. Until the little bombshell of 2 days ago. My in use pair of HDDs in the 224+ might, if I read things correctly, go straight into a 4 bay successor, but the new, currently spare pair of HDDs might not. What to do? I could stay as I am with no cost but 2 unused HDDs, go for the 4125+ or 9225+ or even go for a 923+ Interesting problem hence this message. Many, many thanks and pls keep up the content. Love it!

Totally get the dilemma—those extra 2x16TB drives are a nice bonus, but Synology’s latest move definitely throws a wrench in things. Honestly, if you're keen on staying within the Synology ecosystem and want to actually use all four IronWolf Pros without headaches, the DS923+ is your best bet right now.
No HDD lock-in on that model, so your existing and spare drives will work just fine. It’s solid, snappy, and gives you more flexibility before this whole branded-only business really takes over. You'd basically be securing a more open setup while you still can.
If you’re sitting around the £500 mark, that unit’s still within reach—especially considering what it gives you long-term. I'd say grab the 923+ while you still have full drive freedom.
