Is it possible to upgrade to 16gb RAM for DS416play ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Greetings,

I'd like to upgrade my DS416play to 16gb RAM. I know you tested it already for 8gb RAM cf : https://nascompares.com/ram/ds416play-ram-upgrade/ ). But I'd like to know for certain if I can go for 1x16Gb directly.

Though, those are hard to find for Belgium => "16GB Crucial CT204864BF160B 16 GB (DDR3L, 1600 MT/s, PC3L-12800, SODIMM, 204-Pin) Memory", I'll try to find an offer, if I find out for sure that it will be compatible. Maybe 16gb is to much ? And I'll should go with 8 gb ?

Thank you for your help,

Warm regards,

Jean D.

  Aquiring First NAS ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a NAS.
After long consideration and watching some of your videos again I thought of buying the ds1621+, but... when I enquired about a NAS at a local store they said the ds620slim would be better suited because of the streaming software on it and the pricerange.

I don't know what to do, what to get. Maybe you could help with some advice.

What do I need it for:
- Picture library
- file server(documents, excell files, photoshop and aftereffects files/projects,...)
- we have a big dvd/bluray collection to ingest, family/vacation videos(possibly editing-if possible on NAS with the rpm restrictions 5400rpms)
- iTunes media storage. I want to use it to save the library on so I can access it by computer without needing to attach a external hdd to my laptop.
- We'd like the possibility to watch the videos on our flatscreen tv, tablets, laptop,... I looked at Plex. Looks good but the clerck at the store told me that synology has a streaming app of its own. on iOS it does not get a lot of points.

I watched your test video on the ds1621+ with 4K material. I don't know if we'd have video with 200Mbps bitrate.

about the storage capacity.
I was first looking at 4TB drives but that seems less and less an option if I count the load of ext drives I have at home. we already have around 6-7TB worth of matrial to store/transfer without the dvd/bluray collection. Are 'PRO' drives nescessary or are basic nas drives enough?

I looked at a 6 bay to use RAID6. I like the peace of mind of the security of 2 discs redundancy.

knowing all this. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this, because it has been a hell of two weeks looking into this.

best regards and really looking forward to your thoughts

NAS media streaming to Macbook to replace USB hard drive use?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hey,
So this is just a general question about NAS devices...

For years I have just used USB-connected hard drives to play music, watch films on my Macbook with iTunes/Swinsian/VLC, and now I would like to do the same, but wirelessly so I don't have to keep plugging and unplugging anytime I want to watch/listen to things.

I have little knowledge or experience on NAS, but in my head I'm thinking I can get one, stick some drives in, connect to my router so it will show up on my network, then access it from my laptop with a password or something and then just use it as I would a USB-connected hard drive.

But from some googling and reading, it doesn't sound like it would be that simple at all. Lots of talk about setting up different servers and such which sounds beyond my expertise.

Can you give any help or advice on this? I'm looking at a Synology DS420J if that helps.

Thanks.

Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have finally got things running and now I am looking through the DL section in the QNAP software site and there is a huge amount of software, it is for home use, what do I actually need. BIOS updates and drivers OK, but what else, just the basics, or what do you recommend?

I have read your article about the 8 things wrong.
I have selected a Qnap tvs 472XT.
I am living in a rural area where the internet is no that good
I am planning to upload in the nas all my personal data, as well as movies and music
I want to stream movies and music to my TVs

questions
1. what do you think about the 472xt processor ? will it do the job ? Intel® Pentium G5400T 2-core 3.1 GHz Processor
2. Memory no problem i will expand it as much as i can , may be 8 - 32 gb
3. what about the graphic processor Intel® UHD Graphics 610
4. Noise ? I will locate it far away and do HDMI connection
5. Plex media looks like no issue ?

do really appreciate your feedback and advise

Thanks

  NAS PURCHASE?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Inventory includes: Windows 10 Desktop, Windows 10 laptop, MacBook Air (Catalina), MacBook Air M1 Big Sur). NAS use for centralized storage for disaster recovery.

I have 1TB OneDrive storage and 2TB iDrive storage. I would like to retain both versions of APFS, Catalina and Big Sur along with NTFS on Windows 10 machines. I would also like a local port on the NAS to attach Thunderbolt / USB to provide 20 Gbps for backup of NAS.
