  Synology Drive VS Map Drive?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I purchased a Synology DS920+ in Span.com last year for a small office set up but we use heavy and demanding files (3D models with lots or referenced files, etc). In the local network we use a LAN connection with our shared folders as Map Drive connection (via Synology assistant) and all works really good.
The question is the following:
Sometimes we need to work out of the network. I tested Synology Drive and overall works good (with some programs working directly form the Drive there are some problems when saving, but not a major issue). One option would be to move all the shared folders to Synology Drive, but when working from the network (most of the time), it will be much faster to work directly with the Map Drive connection. Is it a way to synchronise Synology Drive with a Shared folder located also in the NAS, so we can benefit of both systems? Would you recommend another system?
Many thanks in advance for your support and all your videos, they help a lot!

Question about Docker for Synology DS416Play?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, I recently purchased a used Synology DS416Play (Upgraded with 8GB of RAM) and was interested in installing Docker to do more fun stuff with it (Minecraft server) but I saw that this particular model was not natively supporting Docker. I know you can just install it manually but I was met with individuals that have installed it on this particular model with no problems and also individuals that said issues can arise with using Docker on this model. So if you know why exactly this is the case, why is it problematic, and is it too risky to use Docker on this device. I appreciate the time to read and answer my request and hope you have a swell day.

  TVS-H1688X - Can I use Ironwolf Non-pro?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I run a video post production as a solo operator, I do work from editing files, color grading and deliverables.
Recently I purchased a QNAP TVS-H1688X, with the idea to expand my raid system (5 x 8tb Ironwolf Raid zero on external enclosure via Megaraid)
I'd like to move those drives to the QNAP, and build a RAID 5 using the 12 HDD 3.5 slots, but reading the HDD description, they are recommended for 8 bay, and after that it is the Ironwolf Pro.
This system is not running 24 x 7, and I noticed that this QNAP model has 8 bays in the lower area, and 4 bays in the upper area (plus 4 extra SSD bays).
I'm very inclined to populate it with the Non-pro Ironwolf, since I can't replace all the drives to Pro version at this moment.
I was wondering if you have any insight whether the whole vibration is an issue in this model, since the 8 bay and 4 bay are indeed separated and not contiguous. And if perhaps this is some design move from QNAP to allow us to use Non-pro drives without failure.
Thanks!

  Synology HDD migration?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Thank you for taking the time to look at my question.

I am a novice!

I have Synology 415play (SHR config with DSM 6.2.x) which has maximum capacity of 4 x 6TB HDD and which I am close to filling with four of us backing up + multimedia. I was looking at moving to a 420+ or possibly a 920+. I was hoping that would be really easy and a case of just moving the 4 WD Red HDDs from one enclosure to another. And then buying bigger new HDDs over a period.

But then I see an article that says that that might not be possible with HDDs from a DS415play. Is that right? It's not easy?
How do I do it without having to buy a new enclosure and new HDDs??

Many thanks for any advice.

  Home NAS for Family?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello

I am looking to invest in a NAS that can sync files on my devices to the NAS then push these file to separate cloud storage that they use - OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud.

I also want to use it to store my archived music and video production projects and sync these into iCloud

The goal is to build resilience to our storage profile, so data is stored on individuals devices, backed up to NAS then synced to cloud.

I also want to store films and songs to stream to their devices on-demand

Hoping you can help me choose an appropriate NAS to do this.

Thanking you in anticipation.

Steve

Adding an SATA power connector to my NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

I am setting up a QNAP TVS-473e. I am following your excellent setup video series--thank you.
I have added a USB-C expansion card. It has an optional SATA power connector. The card installed fine and the ports are recognized by the 473e. I want to connect the optional power connection. Unfortunately, the 473e has no available power connectors of any kind that I can find. Do you have any suggestions for an adapter to add a SATA power connector to the harness?
