  Which NAS to buy?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am looking for a system that does many things. I am a photographer that travels throughout the USA and the world. When I am not traveling, I do data processing for family business (5) along with their IT needs. I have asked Synology SEVERAL TIMES to help direct me in the right direction to something that would satisfy my needs and their reply was, talk to a company that sell our NAS. NOT MUCH HELP! So, this is what I am looking for in a NAS system. I can access it remotely and can upload photos while traveling. I currently carry portable hard drives with me; HOWEVER, after being robbed in Frankfurt, a months’ worth of photos went with the thieves. I would like the ability to return where I am staying and upload them to (maybe) a cloud drive that would sync to my NAS. I also use PLEX but this isn’t the highest thing on my list (a nice to have). I currently have 85TB on external hard drives. Most items on these drives are historical documents that are not access often. But I do need to get to them. You know that means going through each drive looking for the information I need. I would be the primary user on the NAS. I have 10 other computers throughout the USA that would need access to the NAS mainly for backup. I have 1GB Fiber internet, Netgear Nighthawk X10 R9000 Router, 2 Netgear JGS524NA switches. I am 100% WINDOWS. What would you recommend for a NAS and what type of drives and RAID. WOW, I have watched VID after VID and I cannot really understand what the base way is to configure RAID. Thank you for your time and help.

  D5-300 vs D5-thunderbolt?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have jumped into Emby and discovered it loves my wallet. I initally upgraded my HTPC to a I3-9100 on a H370M-Plus MB with 16GB DDR. I have 2 6TB HDD in a RAID O. Windows raid is not working well and I find I am also wanting more space, and RAID 5 or 10. I am torn between the Terramaster D5-300 or the D5-TB. The big issue is initial cost of the D5-TB cost and needing more drives that I would like to be 8TB. my current system works vary well so I assume a DAS not a NAS to save money would work? Can I use the D5-300 and expect the same level or better performance allowing to put more money to HDD's? Can I upgrade HDD's later if I need more space and how easy/difficult would that be? I am not super computer knowledgeable and any information and directional help would help.

  DS1520+ or DS1621+
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I’m looking at both of these machines as I’d like a 5-Bay or higher NAS. My primary use cases would be:

1: Centralized Backup of 2-3 Home Macs
2: Plex Server hosting mostly 1080p and lower ripped DVDs (I may have some 4K content)
3: Shared file server for our house for important files including frequent offsite online access.

My biggest reasons for looking at this setup is speed and redundancy. I plan on having two drive fault tolerance with either SHR2 or RAID 6, on either device.

I have a UniFi Network installed in my house with switches capable of link aggregation, so on either unit I’d take advantage of that feature.

My biggest concern is that it seems the AMD on the 1621+ Seems to be built less for plex and more for business. On the other hand I’m worried about the lack of upgradability of the 1520+, with soldered memory and no possible addition of 10GB should I want it later.

I plan to populate these fully with 4TB ironwolf drives and to use 500GB drives in both cashe slots.

Wondering what the best ultimate unit would be. I’m not worried about the $100 price difference, but don’t want to go much more expensive than this. I also plan on keeping this for as long as humanly possible.

  Synology IP Camera Compatibility?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi Rob,

I am planning to purchase a Synology DS220+, and am looking at security cameras for it. I was wondering if the Reolink RLC-822A would be compatible? Synology only has up to the 522 listed on their compatibility sheet. The 822 appears to support ONVIF so I was hoping it would work.

Thank you,

Matt

  Best upgrade?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi! Thanks for an excellent site! I would like some advice on what NAS upgrade I should look at. Currently I am on a Synology 214+ where I recently got 2 x N300, 8 TB NAS disks. But I realize that to be able to run Nextcloud or any other software that process images and videos I really need more CPU. I have a lot of personal video in 4K stored and I want to be able to share that to friends and family. I like the DSM but would be fine using the QNAP software too. Thankful for any advice on what model with most bang for the buck. I guess upgrading the RAM on any model would be recommended?
I was looking at QNAP TS-253D-4G or Synology DS720+
Thanks in advance.
