SYNOLOGY OR QNAP? |

HI, I would like a recommendation based on my use case.
I have files, photos, videos.
I want to centralize my info and want to have a reliable nas.
I have read and watched the videos, but still, anytime I go to try the QNAP live platform - is slower than synology. probably less responsive and with a bunch of glitches.
So, just wondering what is your recommendation ? get synology ?
I want a flexible NAS, but also a stable one.
been looking at 253+ 453+ and 420+ / 720+ 920+ from synology.
I don't want to have stability issues, or glitches with programs. I use Alexa, Mac's and love the flexibility to have everything around me ( meaning files )
Also, use FIRETV, roku,
I hope to transfer my home videos to the NAS using PLEX as a server.
Also use Apple TV,
thanks for your recomendation
Current router has 2.5 port ( ax86u) Asus. which I am thinking for using for my NAS.
Dilemma = most synology have 1gig port, some If I use this router I will need to use port aggression for the Asus.
SO, I am not sure either what's best having a router with 2.5 port or having 8 ports of 1gig and using the port aggregation / or adding a 2.5 switch to my NAS.
Having the router with a 2.5 lan gives me the advantage of connecting the internet (xfinity and getting > 1200bps) but, I will be limited on the other lan ports for 1gig
Thanks for your recomnedaiton

** intend to use 2 x 8 TB drives and later expand

TS-251D memory upgrade? |

I am looking to upgrade the memory of my QNAP TS-251D-2G NAS server to get going on virtualization. On Kingston's "Find compatible RAM" page, KVR26S19S6/4 comes up as an compatible upgrade. I would buy 2 modules of that kind, just 8 GB each for a total of 16 GB. However, I was wondering if I instead could use the paired HyperX set HX426S15IB2K2/16. Looking through specs, they should be identical except the HyperX modules have a lower CAS latency (which is normally considered better). At the local retailer, the HyperX set is nearly the same price as two valueRAM modules, and I am not able to find a paired set of ValueRAM. I expect it is better to use paired modules, but I have no evidence for this. Normally I wouldn't hesitate going with the HyperX modules instead, but online forums almost exclusively mention crucial memory upgrades. That is why I am a bit hesitant, and would like expert and/or user advice on whether the HyperX modules would be expected to work, or there could be some subtle differences I am not aware of, that could potentially disqualify the modules. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hello,
I am starting a year-long filming project and am looking for about 40Tb of useable storage. I have 2 lightning ports on my Windows 10 editing computer and a 1GbE port. I will be filming in and exporting in DCI 4k video that is being filmed mostly at 160Mbps but will have some video that is 410Mbps. I have very limited knowledge when it comes to computers and especially NAS systems, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Are there any suggestions on what to get for photo backup with google photos and gmail merging space my wife wants not to pay for google backup. Can I use a NAS to automatically back up the full resolution photos from a few phones?
I would like a simple set up that works and doesn't cost money after I buy the equipment.

Gotcha!s with a DS220j? |

I'm retired and in purely domestic environment. I have a couple of computers - iMac & MacBook Pro - plus a phone and a tablet. I had a couple of external USB drives off the back of the iMac to hold a) my Lightroom images files - about 700Gb - and b) Time Machine backups from the iMac, including the LR images from the first drive. Wanting to make the LR images visible across my home network (which is part Cat5 ethernet, part WiFi) I started looking for a NAS. Given my budget I settled on a DS220j. I know it's not as capable as a DS220+ but given my budget & use case, it seemed more appropriate.
And indeed, mostly it is. It's installed, with two 4TB drives configured as a mirrored pair (SHA?). The LR images are stored in one shared folder, which is itself being backed up to one of the old USB drives using Hyper Backup; and Time Machine is now backing up the iMac, minus the LR images, to a second shared folder. So I'm pretty happy.
But there were some unexpected things. I had planned on installing 2 Volumes within the storage pool and separating the two data stores in that way (a shared folder in each volume). However, the software did not give me the choice of creating multiple volumes during setup - at the end of the setup I was presented with the single Storage Pool and a single EXT4 Volume occupying the whole storage pool. I also quickly learned that a volume cannot be reduced in size! - only increased. So I trashed the first setup and went through it again, with the same result. In many ways this doesn't really matter except for one thing: the Time Machine 'quota' system requires that the file system be btrfs, it seems, not EXT4. Therefore I can't automatically limit the eventual size of the Time Machine backup file, I will have to keep it under observation and eventually trash it (or move it to a safe place temporarily) and then start again with a fresh Time Machine backup. Not a biggie, however.
I think I'm just curious as to why I wasn't presented with the options to create more than one Volume. Is it a limitation of a two-disk setup? Or could it be specific to the DS220j, which is after all aimed squarely at NAS-beginners? I can see that making things easy by removing setup complexities could be justified in that situation.
Finally, I'll add that so far I haven't found the limited resources of the 220j to be a problem. I'm pretty much the only user, so that's not an issue. I was watching the CPU and memory meters while a) copying the LR image files onto the NAS; b) while Hyper Backup was running and creating the backup on the external USB drive; and c) while Time Machine on the iMac was creating the initial backup file on the NAS, and in all cases the CPU stayed at around 25%/30%, while the memory meter never went above 60%. So in my situation, the available resources seem to be good enough.
