NAS for home a photo management ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,

Since you send to your email I didn’t make a decision but I saw a promotion. The
QNAP TS-253D-4G is only at 389€ and the DS220+ is 339€.
Can you please advise me ? What is the best Nas to backup my PCs and Mac and iOS devices, organize all the photos that I have on 8 hard drives (there are certainly a lot of photos that are repeated), the videos, and music.
When I go on the net the common knowledge is that Synology is best for Macs and Qnap has a better hardware. Both have good apps but synology customize better it’s sodtware with its hardware.
I know that the TS 253D should be compare with the DS720+ but this NAS is priced at 459€
So what should I do? By the da220+ or invest more 60€ and buy the Qnap?
What is the best photo app? Qnap or Synology?
Who deals better with both PCs and Mac?

Best regards

Pedro Cortez Pinto

  Ds918 upgrade?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am a photographer/videographer who have some thoughts on my Synology 918+. Would it be possible to connect my Mac mini directly for the use of faster access of video and photo files. I use DaVinci Resolve and Affinity Photo - I wish to hold video files whilst editing on Resolve.

Currently I have 8mg memory, would it half to have ssd’ s fitted and what size. I am on a limited pensioner budget.

Is there an usb importing photo package for the synology?

Does the new Synology Photos cope with Nikon raw files?

Thanks for your help. Great informative videos that keep us upto date,

Kind regards,

Martyn Gunton

Synology DS1621+ vs DS1821+ which NAS would be better to start out with? ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have a few hundred movies, but I haven't backed any up and have no idea how much space that takes up. I ran out of space with iCloud storage which is 2TB, and my pictures are no longer backing up. I shoot RAW photography photos on a professional camera, which I know eats up storage, and I also shoot lots of high-quality videos. I need a storage solution for my wife's digital life as well, and I'm thinking NAS is the right way to go. Additionally, I'm leaning towards beginning a small business in the new year.

It's time to take the leap and I know that you usually do plenty of comparison videos, but since these are so new I'm just not sure when you'll get to a video this specific since it is a 6-bay vs. 8-bay comparison. I have landed on either the DS1621+ or the DS1821+.

I am completely new to this and have already purchased 4 WD RED PRO 6TB drives. Are those even compatible with the Synology NAS?

What would you recommend to someone who is just getting started—especially to one who hasn't even heard the word NAS until earlier this year?

Thanks!

  Upgrading NAS Hard Drives?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

My WD EX2 Ultra 8TB is over 75% full using RAID 1. I've been thinking about buying WD PR4100 16TB (4x4TB) using RAID 5 and later upgrading the hard drives as necessary.

However a friend said I could'nt just replace one 4TB with one 8TB and expect RAID to recover the replaced 4TB onto the new 8TB and then also have additional space. I had to replace all 4TB drives with all 8TB at the same time and somehow use another device to transfer the data from the old 4TB drives to the new 8TB drives.

Is that correct? If so what is the process others use to upgrade their hard drives?

Can you please clarify how I can buy something I can afford now and upgrade later as the need arises and funds become available?

Thanks, Xaviour

Chosing for lifespan of Synology NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am a happy user of DS412+ for over 8 years now in my home-environment.
For 90% I am the only user:
- I run all kind of daily/weekly client-side scripts for image and file backups of several laptops with versioning on NAS (~200G/wk, 6TB total)
- Daily copying big (>10GB) files from/to NAS
- serving audio/video to media-player and/or tv (2TB total)
- backup all raw/edited photo's (2TB total)
- run several small dockers for home automation
- nightly snapshots and hyperbackup
- hosting website
- VPN server

Now with DSM7 around the corner it is time to update to a new model.
While my usage does not require a very expensive NAS, I really hope to buy one that will again last a long time. So I tend to look more at cost over lifespan than absolute cost.
DS420+
- might do the the job just fine
DS920+
- longer lifespan/support
- more capable of providing fast copying while running it's background tasks
- only slightly more expensive
A DS1621+
- longer lifespan/support
- possible to add disks instead of replacing
- possible to add 10GbE in future (will this get common during the life of this NAS)

So for me it all comes down to expectations on lifespan of the different choices. If a DS1621+ lasts me much longer it might be the better deal for me.

What would be your advice?

AS6604T - ASUSTOR Lockerstor 4 is it too much?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi I recently purchased a Mac, but I'm not willing to pay them for extra storage they aren't worth it. So i was looking for a NAS that we can use mainly for backing up our phones at home (lots of photos), and that we can use to backup all the documents in our laptops (also photos).

I also saw in your videos, that you can add apps like docker, or vms, or nodejs, though i don't use this for home use, I just simply have no time to seriously engage but might find just sometime to play arround, and yes i do retro gaming so i'd love to be able to use for emulators. BTW my work is about Data and Analytics, so I don't do video editing, but eventually i can test client server applications.

I was planning to buy a nas with no disk and then buy an empty 5 GB disk, use it without redundancy, and then keep growing in about 5 gb everytime i run out of space so at the end I can have 20 GB.

I was initially interested in the Synology DS920+ vs AS6604T - ASUSTOR Lockerstor 4, synology made sense since it seems to have the most rich catalog of apps and because it was updated to DSM 7. But looking at the Asustor it looks like a solid machine and the 2 ethernet ports plus the hdmi are very attractive.

My LAN is 1 GB BTW, I'm not looking for hyper transfer speeds but definitively don't want to be waiting forever.

So I was wondering, if I buy the Asustor, will I miss a lot DSM 7 and Synology? Is QNAP any good for my case?

Can you help me please choose Thanks

  Synology DS220j - Plex - Sonos - Mac?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I presently use Sonos as my sound system. I have music files (70GB) stored on a WD My Passport drive (1TB) attached to a MacBook Air via USB. On the MacBook Air, I have installed Plex to catalog and serve my music files. Everything works well except, of course, I am unable to shut down the MacBook when wishing to play music stored on the WD drive. Additionally, I back-up files to an Airport Time Capsule (2TB) attached to a Synology RT2600ac router.

I would like be able to shut down the MacBook and still use Sonos and Plex to access and play music files. With this in mind, my plan is to purchase and connect a Synology NAS to the Synology router; then use the NAS to 1) store my music library, 2) install Plex, 3) primarily operate Plex using an iPhone as the Sonos controller and 4) replace the Time Capsule for backing up my MacBook. My plan does not include storing and streaming video.

First first question is whether or not the above configuration the makes good sense? If so, my second is whether or not a Synology DS220j with 2 Seagate 8TB Ironwolf drives (Raid 1) is an adequate NAS choice? If not, then what Synology NAS do you recommend? Thank you very much, SS
