4Bay NAS for home and advance user?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi, Good day

First of all sorry for my bad english, I will try to make it simple. The main reason I was looking for NAS is to find alternative of google photo storage which will end in June 1, 2021 (It is a big topic now, maybe you can do a video for this Smile)

I am currently experiment with Windows SMB and PhotoSync (android), it will automatically transfer my photos to share folder when I place my phone at charging dock.

My requirement is simple,

1) work like google photo.
2) seamless, stable, reliable.
3) for no brainer & non techie to handle their photo & video.
4) SMB storage for local network
5) optional* network file backup, windows shadow copy, git
6) optional* VM to run ubuntu, webserver, pihole, nodejs or windows

The first thing I am looking at is AiFoto 3 and DS photo. From users review both are buggy, but asustor supports seem to be more proactive to resolve their issue.
I had done research for DS920+ and AS5304t through your youtube channel, but still it is hard to decide which is better. Synology seem promising (nvme cache, better internal software).

From your point of view, which photo/video app or brand solutions is better in 2020/2021?

 Upgrading RAM in Synology DS420+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am looking to purchase the Synology DS420+ to use in my home mostly as a Plex Server for my media library.

I would like to upgrade the RAM to a total of 6 GB by purchasing a 4 GB Memory Stick. I would like to purchase it from a third vendor given that Synology's memory is expensive.

I am struggling with finding information of which memory stick will work in the device.

Below are the two I found from Crucial but would like confirmation that it works with DS420+. Secondly, is there a difference between 2666 MT/s vs. 2400 MT/s

https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-Single-PC4-19200-SODIMM-260-Pin/dp/B019FRDKWI/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=ct16g4sfd824a&qid=1607094211&sr=8-2&th=1

Crucial 4GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/S (PC4-19200) SR x8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT4G4SFS824A

or

Crucial 4GB Single DDR4 2666 MT/s (PC4-21300) CL19 x8 SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT4G4SFS8266, 4GB Single Rank

When I posted the question on Amazon Answers the manufacture said it is not compatible therefore I am at a lost of which memory to buy that is cheaper than the Synology Brand.

I would even be willing to go up in RAM to get a compatible memory as long as I am not spending around $100.00

Thank you

 NAS ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I want to buy my first device nas it is mainly for backing up family photos and private material.
I was thinking of taking 2 drives from QNAP
I would be happy to help you choose the right model.
Another question is it worth taking a fit for a 2.5 SDD drive since the feeling is that 3.5 drives in the future were not?
Since I served NAS at 2.5 more expensive
The price range is up to $ 500

Which NAS to buy for streaming and photo storage?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello.

I have a 12tb WD ex2100 under raid so 6tb is accessible.

I’ve hated it since I bought it. The WD RED drives are loud and crunchy sounding. It is constantly grinding at something. I think it is constantly indexing. The photo management and app is very very poor. The performance is ok. So I’ve kept it for about 5 years. I also gave a 2tb Apple time capsule with a 2tb usb hard disk plugged into it. So I’m running about 10tb of space on multiple drives and I want to replace with 1 single system.

But recently I’ve digitised all my blu rays to mkv files which I stream to Apple TV over smb to the infuse6 app (which handles all the transcoding). So, my drive is full and I need a new one.

I want something that is:
Raid as backup is key. It took me months to rip all my blu rays so I want a backup.
Large capacity. Maybe 10tb of usable space under raid (or above)
A decent photo indexing service and app. I currently have 70,000 photos on my iOS devices and 1500 videos (c500gb) And the WD NAS and app are useless for those (so I don’t bother).
AI photo recognition and face detection would be valuable. Also ability to make custom albums would be good (without having to refolder photos).
It has to be quiet. My ex2100 is very loud; too loud to live in my living room behind the sofa.
Not bothered about 2 or 4 drives (but I’m thinking of getting a 4 bay NAS but immediately populating it with just 2 so I have room to grow In future).

I’m looking at the synology ds920+ but don’t know if that is the best option. I know very little about synology and nothing about QNAP.

Any advice you can give would be great.
Thanks
Alex

 Time Machine Backups to Symbology?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

After reading you "Guide to Synology with Time Machine," I was left uncertain whether or how it is possible to back up multiple Macs on a network to the Synology.

- Can all the Macs back up to the same folder?

- Must each Mac back up to its own folder?

- Is any unique configuration required on each individual Mac or are they all configured alike (to access the storage folder(s)?

 NAS Drive Advise?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,
Thank you in advance for your help. Below I'm going to list some bullet point facts to her clarify my situation.

- I currently have an iMac with 7TB of data on a 10TB drive. List consists of all kinds of data, video's photos, documents etc.

- I need to find a solution as my iMac is old and its going to die soon.

- I use apple family share to stream video's to my TV through an apple TV. This is an important feature

- We are a family of 5 all with apple MacBooks

- We all have iPhones, we would like to backup the iPhones to the NAS automatically if possible.

- I'm a backup freak. I do have a code 42 plan but I never want to rely just on that, so a mirror would be nice.

- Being able to access our NAS from outside would be nice but security would be a big concern

So I'm probably looking at some sort of NAS devise but am very open to suggestions

Many Thanks for your help

Steve

 ITunes ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, firstly I found you on youtube. I have no knowledge of what I require, but know what I need to achieve. I currently have all my music on iTunes. I like to own and do not stream. It’s my cd’s and purchases from the iTunes library mainly. Some video and some films. I listen to my music through an iPad/MacBook Pro and 2 x iPods. My question is this. How can I get my library to another iTunes equivalent? And what will I need to do this? If I have been listening correctly to your YouTube channel, I’m talking software and hardware, right? I play my music over Bluetooth to a Samsung sound bar and Bluetooth speakers and a Sonos arc in another room. On another note I have dvds that I still watch through a DVD player. Thank you for reading this!

 Upgrade ds215j ?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have had a ds215j for 5 years or so now but am getting frustrated with the low speed of the unit. I also would like to run Homebridge (Docker required) and cannot on my present unit. Would a ds220+ give me a marked increase in speed as well as the ability to run Docker? I’m happy with the 2x 3Tb hdds and could just swap them into the new unit.

Many thanks.
