  Nas and Plex DTS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I am currently using a shieldTV as a plex server/client and it works pretty well for the most part but sometimes get's bogged down in transcoding. The shield is connected to and AVR receiver via HDMI and passes through DTSMA direct to the AVR for decoding.

I was looking at moving the plex server duties t0 a NAS and also consolidate all my media sources in that NAS. The shieldTV would then just be the plex client. I now see that I might have a problem with DTS being passed through via the shield to the AVR. Also a lot of my video titles only have a DTSMA track. It doesn't matter with my other network devices as it makes no difference to me if they are getting the original audio or a lesser transcoded version.

Is there a dedicated NAS that has the ability to passthrough DTS through the Plex server so that I get the DTS stream on my AVR? If not I'll stick to the shieldTV for plex server duties.

Thanks.

  Dead power board on NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi
I have a dead Vantec HX4R NAS.
I thought I was safe by having the 4 drives configured in Raid5.
BUT, the board is dead (not the power supply).
I have been told that I cannot place the 4 HDDs into a new NAS, as the board controls how the drives work...
I have some 2 bay NAS (4tb or 6tb), but not big enough to make backups of my main PC.
Can I get 2 of the 2-bay units to run together, thus having more capacity?
Many thanks in advance
Kind Regards
Frank

  DS1513+ Upgrade?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I've got a DS1513+ I bought in early 2015, and have been riding the cusp of max capacity for nearly a year. (RAID 5 configuration with 5 x 4 TB WD Red drives, so ~ 16 TB). I've scrubbed through my data on several occasions removing media where I can, but I'm at the point where I can't continue backing up my family's media and keep the movies and home videos that have consumed much of my NAS's storage.

I should also mention I have a Netgear R9000 (with 10 Gbe) that I've been wanting to take advantage of since 2018.

Considering the DS1621xs or the QNAP TVS-x72xt (6 or 8 bay) for my next major upgrade and will donate my 1315+ to my in-laws with family archive redundancies for them to watch at their own home.

The whole family are heavy PLEX users.

What's your recommendation? And what options (adding more memory or SSDs to the new systems) should I really consider before moving forward with this much needed upgrade? I do have several 4K UHD movies we enjoy watching and the current Synology system can barely (if ever) keep up.

Thank you kindly in advance.

Synology NAS upgrade from DS1515+ to DS1520+?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I have a Synology DS1515+ configured to SHR Raid. Unfortunately my DS1515+ will no longer power on even though I purchased a new PSU I guess it's because of Atom Chip problem. Therefore the only migration to another Synology has to be through Hard Disk migration. I would like to know to know whether the newer DS1520+ would allow me to migrate y Hard Disks which are four Western Digital WD40EFRX 4TB

Thanking you in anticipation

  NAS compatible outdoor wifi camera?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Robbie,

At best, I am a novice in the world of NAS and even less experienced with cameras. Somehow I always end up on your Youtube channel. Your videos are great so thank you for the information. I'm curious if you had any luck with the Reolink solar panel outside in London. Even more curious if you were able to get it to power any other devices with the USB interface. Ultimately I would like to create an outdoor wifi camera system utilizing my QNAP TS-453A, without having to pull cable or install additional power outlets. Thank you for your time and expertise.

All the best,

Kevin

  What NAS to buy?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Looking for a NAS mostly for fast backups of home 2 computers (1 TB each ) on network and then daily backups of any changes. Remote access would only be used rarely, could live without it. Have cat 7 and gigabit Asus RT-AC88U router (8 ports) and TP-Link gigabit switches. Media server would be used rarely as we have fire cube and pandora. Thinking of 2 bay, 6TB each? snapshots sound reasonable to have in case computer gets corrupted somehow or gets a virus. What would you suggest?
Main thing is looking for fast backups and ease of use. No gaming. Thought it would be worthwhile to spend a little bit more for the diskless NAS as I can buy WD red 6TB drives for $125 on Amazon. This would allow me to be future-proof if I want to use media server, remote access, etc later. Looking to buy something on Cyber Monday.
Thanks

  Expansion Slot GPU?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, I'm wondering if it is possible to buy a cheaper QNAP unit with a Celeron processor, but that also has an expansion slot and then add a GPU to that slot. Will the PlexPass accelerated hardware feature take advantage of the GPU, thereby accomplishing superior transcoding without having to buy an i3+ processor?

  Synology Budget NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I enjoy your informative youtube videos. I am contemplating on purchasing a Synology NAS on Cyber Monday. I am actively considering between Synology DS120j and Synology 220j. I only have 50 GB in files on my 4 home computers (2 desktops and 2 laptops). I would like to set up a Plex server. I would only steam to one television (1080p) and/or 1 desktop at a time. Would Synology DS120j be suficient to work as a Plex server?! I will likely converty my collection of 75 dvds into a digital format. Would Synology DS120j be suficient?
