4tb WD Red no longer compatible with synology?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi. Thanks for your site and videos. I have recently moved my 4tb wd red HDD from ds412+ to rs1219+. A check today on the synology site shows 4tb red HDD are no longer listed as compatible. They were on the compatible list yesterday I’m sure! My question is which models/serial numbers were compatible? Has WD published when they changed from CMR to SMR on hdd so we can check what we have?

  Recommend a NAS?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have a friend with a small Tax business that is wanting to use a NAS to store her information on, as well as have another backup of her data. She will possibly add another person to her business (which will make 2 people total) and was wanting a NAS for a file server and backup solution. Does this sound like the best option for her and what would you recommend? I have some experience with QNAP NASes.

Thanks you so much for your help,

Craig

  Volume Expansion/ RAID reconfiguration?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello, I'm wondering if its possible (and how) to take my current RAID5 (3TB *10) and reconfigure it to run 10TB*8 with 2 hot spares. (Asustor 6210t) My current capacity utilization is at about 56%. I have the (8) 10TB Ironwolf NAS drives that I want to use and have only inserted one and started the rebuilding process. Is there any way to reconfigure this array without having to off load my data?

Using a Drobo as backup for Synology?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hello,

I recently migrated from a Drobo 5N to a Synology ds918+. I was hoping to re-purpose the drobo into a purely back-up solution for the synology but I cannot find a solution out there. Has no one done this? Is it impossible?

Thank you,

-j

  QNAP TS-253be setup?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Thank you for your article https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXxnxCGMfKY. It convinced me to purchase the TS-253be for 1 specific purpose.
I have 10'ks + of music files and I intend to load an android vm on the QNAP so I can install https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fillobotto.mp3tagger which is the best tagger I have found to clean my collection.

However i am at an impasse and was hoping you might be able to help. How can i get that VM / app to see my hard drive?
Or is there a way i can mount a folder as an sd card into the VM?

My issue is the app does not see my music.

Any support is welcome.

Asustor vs Synology on a budget?
Posted by: Enquiries - 02-28-2020, 03:37 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

So I am thinking of either getting a 2 or 4 bay drive NAS ( Asustor or Synology) if its 4 bay I might half fill it until I have the cash to get 4 drives.
My needs are:

1. Easy to use UI for me and my colleagues to transfer music session files and film session folders around the states. ( I do music and film production so these files can get big fast, and they live all over the place)

2. Use as a video/photo media server/stream for my TV, and mobile phone

3. Decent protection, quality, and access as I plan to leave this running while I tour and such

4. Not too expensive, hopefully between $200- $450

I also am not too sure what raid does in particular other than having more drives means your data gets corrupted less often?
I just want a simple to use, easy to upgrade NAS(eventually) that can do those above. Since I have a low budget I was leaning towards Asustor 6302 or the Synology DS218
