  Replacing a dead Drobo 5n
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-30-2024, 10:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

My Drobo 5n died. My problem, not yours. I'm looking for a much simpler replacement. I'm thinking in terms of a 2-bay unit, set up as JDOB (?). I want to treat the 2-bay unit as a single driv e. Want backup scheduled and run from the unit to an external drive connected to it via usb. It primary use will be to host music files (mp3's), and secondary, to back up pc's. Simple is better, as I am not very hardware savvy. I keep finding pros and cons for Synology, QNAP, Asustor, and TerraMaster. Planning on making a purchase this eminently, so the sooner I hear from you would be great. Don't want a dead Drobo and have buyer's remorse. THX.

Best 6-bay NAS for 4K Plex
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-30-2024, 09:35 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (3)

I’m on the hunt for the perfect NAS for Plex. I need something with 6 or more bays and the ability to transcode multiple 4K HDR streams. My budget is around $800, but if there’s a NAS that’s just as good but a bit cheaper, that’s totally fine too. I just want to be able to stream my 4K HDR movies outside my house without hickups. Thanks a bunch!

NAS for video streaming and personal data storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-29-2024, 10:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I am a surgeon in the US, and a big part of my job is teaching residents. I built a fairly elaborate 6k video rig for capturing high quality surgical videos for teaching. I plan to record dozens of videos, ranging from 1 to 10 hours each (at my bitrate, 8 hours is ~1TB). I need to store both unedited footage and edited/cropped/downsized footage, with the latter being relatively small files. I would like to have those smaller (4k) videos available for residents to stream on an app like Plex or Jellyfin. While I will have informed consent from patients for public display, and there will be no identifying information in the videos, I would naturally want storage and access to be as secure as possible. I am thinking of the QNAP TS-473a with an added GTX 1650 GPU, or the TVS-h474? My computer is a MacBook M2 Pro. I don’t need to edit from the NAS, so I don’t think I need 10GbE? Thank you!

How hard would it be to add 10 GbE to the Aoostar WTR Pro NAS
Posted by: jftuga - 09-29-2024, 02:03 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

I really like the Aoostar WTR Pro NAS, but wish it had 10 GbE instead of 2.5.  I would run TrueNAS and ideally want to use the two NVMe SSD M.2 Gen 3x4 slots for SSDs.  This would leave the smaller M.2 slot open.  I realize that due to lane restrictions, the I may not get the full 10 GbE bandwidth, but would still get greater than 2.5 GbE speeds. What would then be my max throughput in this scenario? I don't mind a hacky solution that would require leaving the bottom ventilation plate removed from the system.  If this is too crazy, is using a 5 GbE external USB dongle an option to get higher throughput without resorting to lagging the two 2.5 GbE interfaces? If so, which one would work best?

Thanks,
-John

  Back up question
Posted by: Sarthur - 09-29-2024, 12:18 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

So we will be hosting our first nas. I think a Synology nas will be the best put together for my situation. We have 2 computers, 4 iPhones and 2 iPads that will be sending photos and videos. I thought it might be fun to have a plex server, but we mainly want to back up important photos. Could I start with a two bay nas and upgrade from there? I read about having another backup off site, but didn’t want to drop too much. I thought about a two bay and move up to 4 bay in a few years.i figure I need maybe 2 tab.

  replacing Drobo5D3 on iMac
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-28-2024, 08:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I have an iMac (10 core i9 ~2020 issue) and I have my Drobo5D3 hooked up via thunderbolt. I'm looking for a replacement DAS. My dream would have 12TB or more tiered storage solution that I can use to store my iTunes library for media streaming to my house. All the units I see all require RAID HDD or expensive SSD solutions. I have an old QNAP TS-1685 and I'm playing with TrueNAS scale and Unraid for backup storage. I find those servers too slow to use as network shares to stream from. I'm IT OAP hence this is my hobby, so I am limited in funds.

Qnap: ssd’s for system pool or cache acceleration?
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-28-2024, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Huge fan of your articles and vids here. Smile
I’ve just upgraded my Qnap TS-664 to 16Gb ram in preparation for switching to QuTS Hero when it becomes available.
My question is: with several of the official Qnap vid tutorials all saying to put the System pool on the ssd’s, I’m wondering if that’s best when I could maybe benefit more from putting the cache acceleration on the ssd’s instead?
My use case is very simple: single user access over SMB for video storage, running no apps on the nas at all… it’s just used as a dumb file server.
I’d welcome your opinion here.
Best regards,
Simon

upgrade and back up from DS1813+
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-27-2024, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

hi
I intend to upgrade from from DS1813+ as software upgrade is no longer supported and wonder what unit to purchase next and what long term DISKS are now the best on the market to use. ATA or SSD Synology's support chart is very confusing - are synologys own disks worth the price ?
at prensent i have a total of 8 x 4TB that needs to be backed up and i will need an additional 80 - 200 TB in the end

what would you recommend bying in Synology or is there now a better more reliable option for running plex media server and general back up on the market without totaly breaking the bank

  Storage Advice
Posted by: Enquiries - 09-27-2024, 05:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (2)

Hi,

I’m looking for advice on whether to go with a NAS or a server for my storage setup. My plan is to use either multiple 16TB drives or a disk bay with 4TB drives, with RAID for redundancy. Over the next few years, I expect my storage requirements to grow to around 200TB, so scalability is a key consideration.

I’d appreciate your thoughts on the best approach for managing this kind of data growth, and whether a NAS or server would be better suited for long-term storage and redundancy. Your input would be really valuable as I plan ahead.

Thank you!
