SSD volume for DSM and packages on DS1621+
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-29-2023, 10:30 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hi!
First of all ... big thank you for sharing your knowledge - I am a NAS beginner with no IT-background and know most of what I know from your YouTube - channel.

My question is:
Is it an advantage / does it make sense to install two 1TB SATA SSDs using RAID 1 on a Synology DS1621+ purely as storage pool / volume for DSM 7 and packages when setting up the system
and then, in a second step, add 4 SATA HDDs to the DS1621+ in a SHR (or RAID 5) array as data storage pool?
I want to use the DS1621+ mainly for photo & video editing and got curious about using a mix of HDDs and SSDs when I saw videos about e.g. the QNAP TS-h973AX, which offers the possibility to add HDDs as well as SATA but also NVMe PCIe SSDs.

What about using an M.2 SSD storage pool on the DS1621+ for DSM and packages?
Would there be any advantage in e.g. having the Lightroom catalogue and photos that are currently being edited on an SSD storage pool / volume (either SATA SSDs or M.2 NVMe SSDs)?

Kind Regards!
Mario

I'm looking for a nas to share my 4k video library on my devices! at home it will be my NVIDIA shield which will do the decoding but on smartphone or tablet a transcoding to 1080 may be necessary on occasion if the bitrate is missed

How to add a second SSD and turn them into a raid 1 array
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-28-2023, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

I'm trying to set up a new DS1821+

Tray
1) 2TB SSD [DSM + VMs, Containers and user data]
2) Space for second 2TB SSD [Which I now have]
3 to 6 8TB 3.5inch HDD [Main volume.
7 Space for future.
8) 4TB HDD for Surveillance station recordings.

DSM 7.1 is installed. I would like to add a second 2TB SSD in tray 2 and turn both SSDs into a raid 1 for redundancy.

What's the best route to achieve this? Note: there is no data on any of the other disks.

Thanks in advance,
Peter.

I have Elecgear Ps5 Heat sink that goes on the ssd cover but I'm planning to buy a 4tb firecuda 530 , theres no harm in using 2 heat sinks right ....maybe no difference but won't harm it? Potentially better ?

QNAP QDA-A2MAR equivalent for Synology DS620Slim
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-28-2023, 12:00 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello, I would like to ask for your help in finding a solution similar to QDA-A2MAR from QNAP. But in this case, it would be for Synology. Or to know if this one from QNAP is compatible with Synology, specifically the DS620Slim model. It would be a way to add more storage to this NAS, which is limited by the maximum sizes of 2.5" disks for NAS. Thank you for your help! Regards!

  NAS Selection

Hi. Value your YouTube videos. Want to have a NAS that I divide into two storage "areas." One for protecting important family docs, the second is the very important one: all family slides (~1,000 35mm or more), videos, scanned pictures, plus DVDs...the entire family's multi-media and history. Loss of this data is not an option. Want advanced features like facial recognition, advanced means for cataloging, then sharing with family via a vpn interface. Running a 1 Gbps rated network. Willing to pay now for ability to expand later (e.g., M.2 cache or drive. Unsure what HDD sizes. Thanks.

  Changing NAS to RAID Config
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-27-2023, 04:30 PM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

Hello
I have a QNAP TS-251D with a TR004 attached. Currently the NAS is not set up with RAID (yes I know...).

If I copied all of the data on the main unit to the DAS and then started again with setting up the TS-251D would I risk the data stored on the TR004?

Thanks

Hi,
Looking for some advice. I currently stream all of my media around my home from my cMP 5,1 where it is stored onto my screens, each of which has an AppleTV device. To be fair this would suffice for most things. However my family would also like to make use of my library, problem is they live at different addresses. The answer would seem to be using something like Jellyfin. I don't want to allow access to my MacPro however, so a server of some kind seems to be the answer. I would rather build than buy, so it's more fun. but the issue I have is the OS.
I'm only really familiar with MacOS, although I have tried Linux on an old MBP, however I am not too far into that.
What would your recommendations be regarding an OS that is both straight forward enough for an ageing beginner as well as inexpensive (Free!)? Can CasaOS run on a homebuilt server? Would it do what I need it to? Or would it be better to learn TruNas or maybe pay for UnRaid.
I'm not certain that the lack of RAID is an issue (althoughI believe that is on the way with CasaOS), as all of the media files will also be on the MacPro, but obviously it would be useful going forward.
Incidentally, have you reviewed at any point the InWin MS-04, as it seems to be a smart little 4bay with included PSU.

Hope this isn't too long and convoluted.

Thanks

Paul

PS I've also had issues connecting my new router....

  Synology 423+ storage
Posted by: Enquiries - 10-27-2023, 03:00 AM - Forum: Before you buy Q&A - Replies (1)

The compatibility chart in Synology says the 423+ doesn’t support 20TB drives. Is this true?

I was hoping to use 4-20TB Seagate NAS pros.
