New Synology NAS buyer

#1
Hi

I recently bought a DS423+, being completely new to the world of NAS's. Reasons for buying were I have alot of movies, which were on a 5tb external hard drive, which i kept connected to my Nvidia Shield Pro, and would then use Plex to watch those movies on my TV. Didn't like the idea of the drive, (which was refurbished) suddenly dying and having to get all those movies again, so thought I'd get a NAS with bigger hard drives to expand my movie library, and also run my plex media server from there. Also liked the idea of being able to remotely access any personal files I want to.

So I've set the NAS up in my living room as that's where the router is. This is the room my TV is in too and so where I do majority of my streaming. My issue is that the hard drives (2 x 12 TB) are quite noisy and irritate me while watching on my tv. I have ordered a mouse pad and velcro strips, but I wonder if there's any alternatives. I wish I could move the NAS to a different room...

Thanks for your message! It sounds like you're really diving into the NAS experience. One option to consider is moving your NAS to a different room, as it can be connected via a LAN cable. This way, you can keep it far away from your living space to minimize the noise while still enjoying seamless access.

Alternatively, you could continue using your Shield TV and simply point the Plex app to the NAS SMB share as the media source. The Shield TV supports NAS directly, so there's no need to rely on USB drives anymore. This setup could streamline your media access and eliminate some of the noise issues you’re facing.
