10gbe on synology though the pcie on synology ds920+

#1
Might be stupid question, but watch the video on the disassembly of the synology ds920+ and knowticed the pcie x1 port for the m2 slots. I know I would have to cut the case, but could this port be used for 2.5gbe or maybe 10gbe Nic. Don’t use the usb if it would need to be disconnected. The drivers for the card would be part of the synology software would it not.
Thanks in advance.

It's a great question!

Yes, it is technically possible to use the PCIe x1 slot (meant for M.2 SSDs) on the Synology DS920+ for a 2.5GbE or 10GbE NIC, but there are significant caveats:

Case Modification: You would need to cut the case, as you mentioned.
Driver Support: Synology DSM doesn't natively include drivers for these NICs. You'd need to find and install compatible drivers manually, which can be challenging and might not be supported officially by Synology.
So, while it's feasible, it's a complex and unofficial modification.

Yes, I have 10gbe on my ds1520 which is basically a ds920 with and extra bay.
I didn't modify the case, but the cover for the nvme slot will not lock into place my adaptor

Be care what chipset you choose for your adaptor. Standard M.2 slot support ~10w max.
AQC113 chipset is 4-5w under load.
AQC107 chipset is 8-10w under load.
Intel X550 chipset is 15-18w under load.

To be safe AQC113 is the only real choice.

I got my adaptor from AliExpress for $84US, "IOCREST M.2 B+M Single-Port 10GbE Network Card RJ45 Ethernet Network Adapter AQC113 Industrial Control Grade Server Network Card"

I'm very happy with mod, 10gbe and Intel Quick sync
