It sounds like you're looking for a solid backup solution for your photos, videos, and music, especially since you're diving back into photography and video editing. A NAS would be a great choice, as it can help you store and manage your files securely while providing easy access to your music library.
Given your budget of £500 and the requirement for at least 2x8TB drives, I’d recommend a few options that could work well for your needs:
Synology DS223+ or DS423+:
Synology NAS units are known for their ease of use, excellent software (DSM), and seamless integration with media servers like Plex or Emby. The DS223+ or DS423+ (with the 4-bay option) would give you room for expansion.
You can set up automatic backups for your photos and videos and use Plex or Synology's built-in Media Server for your music. Both models also support ECC RAM for data integrity, which is an added benefit if you want to ensure your files are safe.
As for the drives, 8TB HDDs (like the Seagate IronWolf or WD Red) are solid choices for NAS storage. If you’re just starting, you can go with a 2-bay NAS and expand later when your storage needs grow.
