Difference between hdd+m2 nvme vs sata ssd

#1
Hello,
I have a question, if I put in the Synology DS923+ with a 10GBe LAN connection: Variant A: 4x HDD + m.2 NVME SSD as cache or Variant B: 4x SATA SSD

Would be a big difference, or practically none between them in term of speed down/up, bottleneck? Smile There is no need for specific numbers, only roughly.

I know and It is clear to me that the price-to-storage ratio is absolutely clear for hdd, as well as noise, but I am more interested in comparing download/upload or bottleneck performance of both variants.

Thank you for reaching out with your query. Comparing Variant A (4x HDD + m.2 NVME SSD as cache) and Variant B (4x SATA SSD) for the Synology DS923+ with a 10GBe LAN connection, the primary difference lies in speed, bottlenecks, and overall performance.

In general terms, Variant B with SATA SSDs would likely offer faster read/write speeds compared to Variant A, which combines HDDs with an m.2 NVME SSD cache. SATA SSDs are known for their higher data transfer rates and lower latency. The m.2 NVME SSD cache in Variant A helps accelerate frequently accessed data but may not match the sustained speeds of SATA SSDs.

However, actual performance can be influenced by various factors, including the specific models of HDDs, NVME SSD, and SATA SSDs you choose, as well as your usage patterns.

In summary, if speed and immediate access to frequently used data are top priorities, Variant B (4x SATA SSD) might provide better performance. However, if balancing performance with a more cost-effective storage solution is essential, Variant A (4x HDD + m.2 NVME SSD as cache) remains a viable and economical option.
