Small bussines NAS

#2
Thank you for your message, and congratulations on starting your business! It’s great to hear that your DS720+ has been serving you well so far. Your setup with Blackmagic ATEM Mini Extreme and HyperDeck HD sounds fantastic, and it’s clear you’re making the most of your tools.

To answer your question, both options have their merits, but it really depends on how you want to manage your data moving forward. Expanding your DS720+ with the DX517 enclosure is a good choice if you prefer to keep everything centralized. It’s straightforward to add the storage, and you won’t need to manage a second system. However, since the expansion relies entirely on your DS720+, if something were to happen to that unit, both your private and business data would be affected.

On the other hand, a standalone 4-bay NAS like the DS423+ would give you a completely separate system for your business. This would help keep your private and professional workflows independent, which might be useful given the nature of your team’s work. It also means your business NAS would be dedicated entirely to storing and sharing footage, which could improve performance when your team is uploading clips or accessing shared files.

Financially, as you noted, the DX517 and the DS423+ are similarly priced. Considering the flexibility and added security of having a separate system for business, I would lean towards the DS423+. You can set it up in your office, configure it for your team’s workflow, and still keep your personal data completely separate.
