For local use, transcoding isn’t typically necessary, especially if your 4K TV or streaming device can handle the native file formats (like MKV or MP4). The DS1522+ will stream these files directly without issue.

If you prefer a more budget-friendly option that’s still capable, the Synology DS423+ is another great choice. While it’s less expandable than the DS1522+, it includes hardware transcoding support, which might be useful if you ever stream to devices that can’t natively play certain file types.

Both options are solid, but the DS1522+ offers more future-proofing for advanced features as your needs grow.
