While it’s true that Synology is moving away from the J series, the DS223j still offers a dependable and budget-friendly option with enough support longevity to make it a worthwhile choice.

As for obsolescence, it really depends on your needs. For basic file storage, backups, and light media streaming, the DS223j should remain useful for a good 5-7 years, possibly longer if you don’t need the latest features. If you anticipate needing more power or compatibility with new apps in the near future, a step up to the DS223+ or a more powerful model could be a better long-term investment.
