The warning you are getting is probably about thin volumes (thick volumes can not have snapshots). You should be able to change it.
If you get expansion unit, this will be an easy and fast way to expand and improve performance. Bigger drives are welcome.
USB will certainly be faster than LAN. TS-870 is powerful enough for expansion.
