Asustor User Homes Folder

#1
Hi guys,

I just added an SSD to my Asustor AS1102T in addition to the older existing 6TB HDD. I was hoping to move "User Homes" with my Photo Gallery MyPhoto/SmartUpload to the SSD for faster access. However, all of the shared folders EXCEPT "Home" and "User Homes" can EDIT and change the volume.

Do you know if this can never be changed unless I reformat everything and start over? My initial thought for workaround was running a daily backup from SmartUpload to vol2/Photos (my SSD) and deleting any content from SmartUpload - but this seems crazy.

Any thoughts.

Thanks.

UPDATE:
Please ignore this post.  I have backed up my volumes, nuked the system and made my SSD the volume one.

Thanks.

It sounds like you're trying to move the "User Homes" folder to the new SSD for faster access, but Asustor's system doesn't allow changes to that specific folder without affecting your NAS setup. Here's a breakdown of the situation and possible solutions:

1. User Homes Folder Limitation
The "User Homes" folder is a system-defined folder, and Asustor, like many NAS systems, locks certain system folders (like "Home" and "User Homes") to avoid accidental configuration changes or data loss. This is likely why you're unable to move or edit this folder directly to another volume without causing issues.

2. Workaround Options
There are a few approaches you could try, although none are perfect:

Option 1: Move Data Manually (Not the Folder)
Rather than moving the entire "User Homes" folder, consider moving the actual data files (like your Photo Gallery or SmartUpload) to the SSD manually. You can:

Create a new shared folder on the SSD (like Photos_SSD).

Manually copy the content from User Homes to the new SSD folder.

Update any relevant app configurations to point to the new folder on your SSD, so your Photo Gallery and SmartUpload access that instead.

You can leave the "User Homes" folder in place and only move the files themselves. This avoids any system restrictions, while still speeding up access to your photo gallery.

Option 2: Use Backup and Sync
If you're worried about data safety, you could create a backup strategy like you mentioned:

Set up a scheduled backup task to copy files from the "User Homes" or "SmartUpload" folder to the SSD (using a sync task or cron job if supported).

While not as fast as a direct transfer, this allows you to keep a backup copy on the SSD without manually deleting content each time.

Option 3: Reformatting (Last Resort)
If you're willing to reformat everything and start over, you could consider restructuring your NAS volumes:

You can create a new volume on your SSD and assign "User Homes" to that volume during the setup process. However, this is a big decision and could cause data loss if not carefully handled.

A reformat would allow you to customize your volume setup to ensure your SSD holds specific folders like "User Homes," but this would be more of a last resort if other solutions don’t work for you.
