NAS for Dell EMC 15.36tb Drive

#1
I came across a few Dell EMC 15.36tb SSD Drives (SDFHS61DAB02T) and wish to use it in NAS or server configuration. Are there any NAS you know that can be used with this drive?

Thank you for reaching out! Using Dell EMC 15.36TB SSDs (SDFHS61DAB02T) in a NAS or server is an interesting idea, but there are a few factors to consider regarding compatibility and optimal usage. Here's my advice:

Key Considerations
Drive Type and Interface:

Dell EMC SSDs are typically designed for enterprise use and may have proprietary firmware. Confirm that the drives have a standard SAS or SATA interface for compatibility with NAS devices.
Compatibility with NAS:

Not all NAS devices support enterprise-grade SSDs. Look for models that are compatible with SAS/SATA SSDs and allow for large storage capacities.
Heat and Power:

Enterprise SSDs like these may require proper cooling and higher power delivery. Ensure your NAS or server can handle these requirements.
NAS Options
QNAP Enterprise NAS

Recommended Models:
QNAP TS-h1290FX: Supports SAS/SATA SSDs, PCIe 4.0, and 10GbE connectivity.
QNAP TS-1677XU: SAS support with optional SAS expansion cards.
Designed for high-performance workloads and enterprise-grade drives.
Synology Enterprise NAS

Recommended Models:
SA6400: A scalable option for SAS/SATA drives with support for SSD caching and up to 180 drives using expansion units.
DS3622xs+: 12-bay NAS with excellent SSD support and enterprise features.
Custom Server Build

If NAS compatibility is uncertain, a custom server using TrueNAS or Unraid offers flexibility. Pair with a SAS HBA card (e.g., LSI 9300-8i) to ensure proper drive communication.
Use Case Optimization
Storage Pool:
Use these drives in a RAID 5/6 or ZFS pool to leverage their speed and reliability.
Applications:
These drives are overkill for standard backups or file storage but ideal for high IOPS applications like databases, virtualization, or media editing.
Final Recommendation
If you're looking for a turnkey NAS solution, the QNAP TS-h1290FX or Synology SA6400 are excellent choices for enterprise SSDs. For greater flexibility, a custom server build with TrueNAS offers the best balance of compatibility and performance.

Do check the drive firmware. They might be locked to DELL
