Data migration

I am about to replace a Synology DS220+  with an asustor AS5402. The Synology system runs two Seagate Ironwolf 6 TB HDDs in a RAID 0 array. I shall be increasing the storage on my new nas to 16TB using two Samsung 870 QVO 8 TB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State Drives. Can you please let me know the best way to migrate data from my old nas to my new nas. thank you

To migrate data from your Synology DS220+ to your new Asustor AS5402, follow these steps to ensure a smooth transfer:

Back up your data: Before beginning any migration, it's always safest to have a backup of your data. If possible, create a backup on an external hard drive or cloud service to avoid data loss.

Prepare the new NAS (Asustor AS5402):

Install the Samsung 870 QVO 8TB SSDs in the new NAS and configure them for RAID (RAID 1 or RAID 0, depending on your preference for redundancy or storage size). Since you are upgrading to SSDs, you'll want to make sure they are formatted and set up properly.
Set up the Asustor NAS with your preferred configuration and network settings.
Connect both NAS systems to the network: Make sure both the Synology DS220+ and the Asustor AS5402 are on the same network and accessible via their IP addresses.

Use a data migration tool:

Asustor’s “DataSync” Tool: Asustor provides an application called "DataSync" in the App Central section of the NAS. This app allows for seamless transfer of files between different NAS devices on the same network. Install this tool on the Asustor NAS and use it to copy data from the Synology DS220+.
SMB/AFP/FTP: You can also use file-sharing protocols like SMB, AFP, or FTP. On your Synology NAS, enable the relevant file-sharing protocol (SMB is commonly used). Then, on the Asustor NAS, mount the shared folders or use the file manager to copy the data over. This method might take longer depending on the amount of data being transferred.
rsync (optional): If you're comfortable with command-line tools, rsync can also be used to sync files between the two NAS systems over the network. You'll need to enable SSH on both devices and use an rsync command to transfer the files.
Verify data integrity: Once the transfer is complete, make sure all your files are intact on the new Asustor NAS. Double-check that none of the files are corrupted or missing.

Optional: Reconfigure apps and services: If you're running any applications on your Synology NAS (like Plex, surveillance, etc.), reinstall them on the Asustor NAS and reconfigure them to point to the newly transferred data.

Remove the old NAS (Optional): Once you're satisfied that everything is working on your new Asustor NAS, you can either keep the Synology DS220+ as a backup or remove it.

By following these steps, you should be able to migrate your data safely and efficiently from your Synology DS220+ to your new Asustor AS5402.
