I have a qnap ts464 in my house and just got a ts262. I placed the 262 in my friends house and want to set up HBS3 to backup my home NAS (the 464) to the ts262. I enabled RTRR and tried using the public IP addres but it would not connect. Any ideas?

To set up HBS3 (Hybrid Backup Sync) for remote syncing between your QNAP TS-464 at home and the TS-262 at your friend's house, here are some troubleshooting steps and considerations to help resolve the issue:
Check Port Forwarding on Friend's Router:
Ensure that your friend's router is configured to forward the necessary ports to the TS-262. By default, HBS3 uses ports such as 873 for RTRR (Remote Transfer and Replication) and 443 for HTTPS. If these ports are not forwarded correctly, the connection will fail.
Confirm the Public IP Address:
Verify that the public IP address you’re using for your friend’s network is correct. If your friend’s ISP uses dynamic IPs, the public IP could change, which would break the connection. You can use a dynamic DNS (DDNS) service to make this easier if the IP is frequently changing.
Enable RTRR on TS-262:
Ensure that RTRR is properly enabled on the TS-262 (your friend’s NAS). You can do this by going to Control Panel > Applications > Hybrid Backup Sync > RTRR. If it's not enabled or not properly configured, it will prevent the backup from connecting.
Check the Firewall Settings:
On both the TS-464 and TS-262, make sure that firewall settings are not blocking the connection. You may need to adjust the firewall settings to allow the necessary ports for RTRR or temporarily disable it for testing purposes.
Use Tailscale for Easy VPN Setup:
If you’re experiencing issues with port forwarding or have trouble with dynamic IP addresses, using a VPN solution like Tailscale can simplify the connection. Tailscale creates a secure, direct connection between devices over the internet using WireGuard, without the need for port forwarding or complex network setups. By installing Tailscale on both the TS-464 and TS-262, you can create a private network between the two devices, bypassing external routers and firewalls. Once connected, the TS-464 should be able to sync with the TS-262 as if they were on the same local network, greatly improving reliability.
Test the Connection Locally:
If possible, try connecting to the TS-262 from another device inside the same local network as the TS-262 (your friend's house) to ensure that the NAS is working correctly. This helps to rule out any internal issues with the NAS or network configuration.
Check for HBS3 Errors:
On the TS-464, check the Hybrid Backup Sync logs for any specific errors related to the remote connection attempt. This might give more insight into what’s going wrong (e.g., authentication errors, timeouts, etc.).
