what NAS to get, trunas/synology what sizes etc

#1
I mainly want to back up a lot of PICTURES and PDFs. try to mitigate bit-rot. have it available to be able to look at photos, pdfs, some files remotely, is the main reason I want/need one.
offload documents, and pictures so they don't take up space in my main PC. (I have 4 SDDs attached and others in the closet Tongue )

TrueNAS is a powerful and flexible NAS solution, but it does require some maintenance to keep it running smoothly. On the other hand, Synology is a more out-of-the-box solution that is easy to set up and use, but may not offer as much customization as TrueNAS. If you're looking for a basic option that will meet your needs, the DS218play is a good choice. It offers good performance and has all the basic features you need for storing and accessing your files. If you need more advanced features, such as the ability to run virtual machines or use Docker, the DS220+ is a good option. It includes a range of additional features that can help you get more out of your NAS.
