TOS6 - Bootloader/OS location

#1
I want to set up a new F8 Plus in 5 drive R5 or TRAID config. The bootloader & OS takes up space on 2 of my NVMe drives reducing the overall pool size. I'm using all 4TB drives and have 3 slots free. Does it make sense to install a smaller drive, perhaps 1TB for the bootloader and keep all of my 4TB drives free for my RAID array? This still leaves me 2 slots for future expansion. This is brand new and I have no data so I can rebuild it if warranted.

Thanks,
Dave

P.S. Love your videos, they helped me decide on which NAS to get and are helping me set it.

Yes, you can definitely go that route—using a smaller NVMe just for the bootloader/OS makes total sense, especially to free up your full-capacity 4TB drives for the RAID array.

That said, just a heads-up: some folks have run into issues getting the NVMe drive to show up properly during the TOS install process. It doesn’t always behave as expected right out of the gate. That said, it can work—you’re in a great spot to experiment since you’ve got a clean slate and no data yet.

If you give it a try and run into visibility issues, sometimes tweaking BIOS settings or trying a different NVMe model can help. Worth playing around with if you're up for a bit of tinkering.

Appreciate the kind words too—really glad the videos have been useful!
