Server Upgrade

#1
Upgrading from a ds918+ that worked fairly well for us, want to go with a rackmount solution. Not doing and NVR or much VM stuff, mostly do local file sharing and active backup for business for 10-15 computers.

Thanks for reaching out! It sounds like you're ready for a solid upgrade from your DS918+ to a rackmount solution, especially considering your business needs with 10-15 computers.

Rackmount Solution Recommendation:
Given your budget of $5000 with drives and 50TB of storage (after RAID), I would recommend considering the Synology RS1221+ for your use case. Here’s why:

Synology RS1221+

The RS1221+ is an excellent rackmount solution for small to medium-sized businesses. It features a powerful AMD Ryzen CPU and 4GB of RAM (expandable to 32GB), offering smooth performance for file sharing and business backups.
This model supports Active Backup for Business, making it ideal for backing up your 10-15 computers and other important data. It also offers advanced data protection features like snapshots and replication, ensuring your business data stays safe.
The RS1221+ has a 4-bay configuration, allowing for future storage upgrades. You can easily scale it to meet your growing needs with large-capacity drives.
Drive Setup (50TB after RAID):

With your target of 50TB usable storage, you could start with 16TB or 18TB hard drives, such as Seagate IronWolf Pro or WD Red Pro, which are designed for NAS environments and RAID configurations.
A RAID 5 or SHR-1 setup would work well for balancing redundancy and storage capacity, giving you a reliable and efficient solution.
Key Features for Business:

Active Backup for Business: This app simplifies backup management for your computers, servers, and virtual machines. It’s fully integrated into the Synology ecosystem, offering centralized control.
Snapshots: The RS1221+ supports snapshots to protect your data from accidental deletions or ransomware attacks.
Cloud Backup: For added data protection, you can integrate with cloud services to keep a secondary backup off-site.
High Availability: If uptime is crucial for your business, the RS1221+ supports High Availability to ensure continuous operation in case of hardware failure.
