USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 DAS Solutions

#1
Hi

I currently have 3x6TB SATA drives configured in RAID 5 with Intel RST. This is on a new W11 PC. I would like to move to a hardware based RAID system, but I have no need for a NAS (I only have one computer). Performance is a consideration and I would like to make use of the fastest USB port on my PC (USB 3.2 Gen 2x2).

I'm struggling to find a DAS enclosure that would use the speed of that port. Any recommendations? Or would the SATA drives be the limiting factor rather than the USB port? Or should I just make use of 2.5gbe port and go NAS (though I expect to pay a premium for NAS features that I won't use).

I use my PC mostly for editing photos and 4k video, but my Lightroom catalogue and the video files (while being edited) all sit on an M2 SSD. So the DAS is mostly for static or archive data. Read performance is more important than write.

Any thoughts?

PS I found you by watching your excellent review of the QNAP TS-464.

Yes, hard drives only achieve speeds around 200MB/s. Having them connected via 10Gbit USB will not make sense. USB3 5Gbit would be sufficient.
If you use SATA SSD or NVMe then you can benefit from USB 10Gbit speeds.
