Help suggesting NAS for PC with plex

#1
Hello, I am currently running a Dell Optiplex 3020 tower Intel i5-4590 with 12Gb Ram, one 500Gb SSD as main and two 4.5 TB for storage of movies and shows. The only use for this is Plex, I might have exhausted the space on the Dell and would like to entertain another option to store 2 additional 4.5 TB HDDs. I can still use this PC, I would like to have the ability to extend the storage space with additional HDDs. Any advice. I have no experience with NAS.

Since your Dell Optiplex is already handling Plex, you’ve got two good options depending on how you want to expand:

Get a NAS like the Synology DS423+ – This would let you offload storage while keeping your Plex server on the Dell. With limited remote access (due to hardware transcoding limits) but no restrictions for local streaming, this setup would work well for a home media server. Plus, you’d get RAID support for better storage management.

Move your existing PC parts into a larger case like the Jonsbo N3 – This way, you can add more hard drives and keep everything in one system instead of running a separate NAS. The Jonsbo case would give you several extra bays, and since you’re already familiar with your hardware, it’s a straightforward upgrade without changing your software setup.

Both options have their pros and cons, depending on whether you want a dedicated NAS or just more storage in your existing system.
