ds2422 help

#1
Dear NASCompares team

My family and our small businesses have been using Synology products for 10-12 years now.
We've hit our next lifecycle replacement point and are in need of more storage space.
I would like to replace our 9x ds916 with 2x DS2422.

Does the DS2422 work with 12x 18tb HC550 and 12x 20tb HC560?

I would like to consolidate and double our existing drives (6x 18tb HX550 and 6x 20tb HC560) into two DS2422 devices for backup and geographical redundancy. As such it is essential to know if our drives will work with the new devices. We got a bit scared off by internet stories of Synology devices no longer working with WS Ultrastar drives. We heard similar stories from the local IT shop where we usually buy our hard drives and synology devices and they suggested we pick qnap.

Thanks in advance

Your DS2422 should technically support the 18TB HC550 and 20TB HC560 drives, as they are enterprise-grade SATA drives. However, Synology has been pushing their own branded drives and has limited official compatibility for third-party HDDs, especially on enterprise models like the DS2422.

Key Considerations:

Synology’s Compatibility List: The DS2422 officially supports 18TB and 20TB Ultrastar DC HC550/HC560 drives in some regions but is not explicitly listed for all.
Drive Recognition: While the drives will likely work, Synology DSM may show "Unverified Drive" warnings, and future updates could introduce restrictions.
Workarounds: Users have bypassed compatibility warnings by modifying DSM, but this is not officially supported and could impact warranties.
Alternative Options:

QNAP: More flexible with third-party drives, supports ZFS (QuTS Hero) if you prefer data integrity features.
TrueNAS: A DIY NAS using a ZFS-based OS might give you full control without vendor lock-in.
If your IT shop has firsthand experience with issues, it might be worth testing one DS2422 before committing to both.
