Hey Guys - thanks for all the videos and information !
I am at the point that I am now seeing issues with both my 1815 units after a power outage, they won't boot, so am looking to get them repaired but I wondered if you had any thoughts on simply migrating from the older units to the 1821+? I would keep the older units (at least on in operation) and the second as a spare unit if needed. Can I simply move the drives one by one from the older unit to the new unit and boot up? Or do I need to start fresh and move the data over via backup restore?

Sorry to hear about the trouble with your DS1815+ units after the power outage. It’s not uncommon for older NAS units to encounter boot issues, especially after sudden power cuts. You can certainly look into getting those units repaired, but moving to the DS1821+ might be a smoother long-term solution, especially considering the performance improvements.
As for migration—good news! Yes, you can migrate your drives directly from the DS1815+ to the DS1821+ without starting from scratch. Synology has a robust migration system. Here's how it generally works:
Ensure your drives are healthy: Before moving them, make sure there are no existing issues with the drives themselves (check SMART data if possible).
Check for DSM compatibility: Ensure both the DS1815+ and DS1821+ are running compatible versions of DSM. If your DS1815+ is on an older DSM version, consider updating it if possible before the migration.
Move the drives over: Once you're ready, you can shut down both NAS units, take the drives from the DS1815+ (keeping the order the same), and slot them into the DS1821+. When you boot the DS1821+, it should recognize the existing drives and configuration and ask if you want to migrate.
DSM Migration Wizard: The DSM Migration Wizard will guide you through the process, ensuring that the data and settings are carried over.
Backup: Even though this process usually goes smoothly, I'd still recommend backing up your data before starting the migration, just in case.
Once the migration is complete, you should have everything running as before with the added power and features of the DS1821+. You could keep one of the DS1815+ units as a backup unit or use it for less critical tasks if you manage to get it working again.
