Drobo 5N or 5N2 convert to TrueNas or Unraid

#1
Hi there, Like your channel BTW.
This might be an unusual question as I cant see it referenced on your site....but ....

1. Can TrueNas or Unraid be installed and run on a Drobo 5N or Drobo 5N2?
2. If so, which would be better? I.e. Would truenas provide a worthwhile performance improvement over the current drobo software or would the drobo hardware spec be a bit limiting and
therefore Unraid would be a better option?

This would (most likely) be used for a raided backup only of another NAS and likely just for incremental back ups.

Thanks

Deano, thanks for the kind words! While it's not a common query, it's certainly an interesting one. Regarding your first question, installing TrueNAS or Unraid on a Drobo 5N or 5N2 isn't a straightforward process due to hardware and software compatibility constraints. Drobo NAS devices have proprietary firmware and software that aren't easily replaceable with third-party solutions like TrueNAS or Unraid. Additionally, the hardware specifications of the Drobo 5N and 5N2 might not meet the requirements for running TrueNAS efficiently.

However, if you're primarily looking for a RAIDed backup solution for another NAS, both TrueNAS and Unraid offer robust features for this purpose. TrueNAS is known for its reliability, data integrity, and enterprise-grade features, which could provide a worthwhile performance improvement over Drobo's software. On the other hand, Unraid offers flexibility and ease of use, especially for users with varying drive sizes, and could be a better fit if you prioritize ease of setup and management over performance.
