NAS for Plex and back up

#1
Thanks to your site I'm looking to get the Synology DS423+ with 4 4TB drives set for RAID 5.

I want to run Plex on it, but I also want to use some of it as a backup for some other documents. Can I use it as a Plex server AND a normal NAS? I've looked all over and it seems to never be mentioned when talking about Plex.

Thanks

Hi,

Yes you can.
Basically you should look at it the other way around.

You will be running a NAS - and on that NAS you can save your backups and run a Plex.

If you look at the YouTube channel you will see a bunch of videos comparing how well Plex runs on different NAS's.

But if all the devices that will look at content from your NAS can handle their own decoding (showing) of the video stream you will not need any transcoding - and therefore the need for a NAS with a GPU on the processor will decrease (not be needed).
So that is the only thing I think you need to consider - what will be your use case and then buy the NAS.

My systems:
DS1821+, 10 Gbit NIC, 32 GB RAM, 5 Exynos 14 TB (1 spare on shelf) | DS3612XS, 10 Gbit NIC, 12 WD RED 3 TB (one hot spare)
