Use. of WD SN850x 2TB NVME's as cache

#1
Just curious, I have 2 2TB SN805x's laying around, and was wondering if I could use in those in the place of the paltry Synology 400g NVME's as cache drives.

I can't seem to find my answer anywhere. I ended up getting a Synology 1821+

Yes, you can use your WD SN850x 2TB NVMe drives as cache drives in the Synology 1821+, as long as the drives are compatible with the NAS in terms of the interface (M.2 NVMe) and the available slots for cache installation.

The Synology 1821+ supports NVMe drives for cache, so using a pair of SN850x 2TB drives as cache should be feasible. However, it's important to note that Synology recommends using drives from their officially supported list for best performance and reliability. While WD SN850x drives are high-performance SSDs, they may not be on Synology's official compatibility list, so you might need to proceed with caution regarding long-term support or warranty issues.

To summarize:

Yes, you can use them, but be aware of potential compatibility considerations since they're not listed among the official Synology-compatible drives.

Performance-wise, the SN850x should work well as cache drives and provide a significant performance boost compared to smaller capacity NVMe SSDs.

It could be a great way to make use of your extra drives and enhance the performance of your NAS!
