Looking for 1st NAS, biased to Synology due to belief their software is better/simpler? than others. Use will be docs and movies initially trying more advanced capabilities as knowledge develops. The DS1511+ seems to be the option based upon your reviews and thoughts. My question is does the 1511 need hardware transcoding assistance or is it fine for a household with 1 large 4k tv?
Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Thanks for reaching out! The Synology DS1522+ is indeed a fantastic choice for a first NAS. It offers great flexibility and performance for home use, including storing documents and streaming movies.
For local use, transcoding isn’t typically necessary, especially if your 4K TV or streaming device can handle the native file formats (like MKV or MP4). The DS1522+ will stream these files directly without issue.
If you prefer a more budget-friendly option that’s still capable, the Synology DS423+ is another great choice. While it’s less expandable than the DS1522+, it includes hardware transcoding support, which might be useful if you ever stream to devices that can’t natively play certain file types.
Both options are solid, but the DS1522+ offers more future-proofing for advanced features as your needs grow.
