New NAS - Enquiries - 10-11-2023

Good day,

I hope you can help me.

I am looking into setting up some services at home.
1. Data Backup and Sharing
- Mainly Media
- Phones and PCs
- Home and Away
2. Plex or JellyFin
- To be able to stream backup media on all devices
- I guess I can write a transcoder to make sure that there will be no transcode on demand.
3. Would like to use docker and spin up VM
- this could be setup on a mini PC I guess.
- learning
- Discord bots
- Home automation

I have been watching lots of your videos and reading your blogs and seem to come to these three NAS setups.

QNAP TS-464-8G
- Worried about security

Synology 4-Bay DiskStation DS923+
- 1GBe will need a adapter for 2.5GBe
- No GPU for transcoding

ASUSTOR Lockerstor 4 Gen 2 AS6704T
- Software

Apart from choosing the NAS itself trying to see what HDD/SSD/nvmes i need to buy and in what configuration confuses me.

Thanks for your time.

Kind Regards
Malcolm

For optimal VM performance, it's recommended to consider an Intel Core i5-powered NAS like the TS-674. However, if you're on a budget, alternatives like the Celeron-based DS423+ or TS-464 can still handle your needs. QNAP has improved its security measures, but it's always wise to bolster your setup with a robust firewall to take security into your own hands.
