How many cameras can I safely use on my DS920 plus Synology NAS? I run currently a virtual station, Plex, and Active backup. I have 12GB of RAM, or should I instead buy the DVA 1622?

Buying DVA model is only recommended if you need Synology smart surveillance features. Otherwise, any plus series NAS will do a good job.
Here is ds920+ limitations:
Maximum IP camera: 40 (total of 1,200 FPS at 720p, H.264) (Including two free camera licenses; additional cameras require
the purchasing of additional licenses)
