WD Ultrastar HC560 - clicking noise when it is turn off and turned upside down - Gabe63454 - 12-15-2022

Hi everyone,

Hope it is ok to ask here. Few weeks ago I bought a WD Ultrastar HC560 20TB HDD and I have 1 odd thing with it. I already asked the shop I bought this from but they don't have any in stock so they cannot check (asked on Reddit too but noone answered). I saw that you guys reviewed this HDD, if it is not much to ask, could you check 1 small thing for me? When the HDD is turned off (and all cables are disconnected for that matter) if I hold the HDD in my hand and slowly turn it upside down I can hear a "clicking" noise coming from inside the HDD. It is like if a spring is sliding on a rod there or similar, hard to tell. Otherwise the HDD is working fine, no issues observed yet. Obviously I don't expect this (nor had anything like this before) from a HDD so would like to know if this is normal or not. I could write a mail to WD but I am sure they would just say send it back even if it is "normal". Would you help me with this if you guys still have these HDDs?

Thanks in advance, Gabe

With drives, they either work they don't. You can run a SMART test. If it comes back OK, then there is no issue.
But there is no harm in dropping an email for WD.

Thanks for the answer. I opened a support ticket to WD. The wierd thing is I asked around in few places where there should be potential HC560 owners and it seems literally nobody has this HDD Smile.
