NAS for two camera home security (one being a doorbell) - Enquiries - 01-16-2025 I am in the process of choosing a Synology NAS to support the use of Surveillance Station. Being new to the use of Surveillance cameras, I plan on using a doorbell and one WIFI camera to start (I do not have PoE wiring). Nor do I see the the need for extensive use of live feed notifications (at least currently). As I am entering this space, I am not sure what I may need/want in the future and choosing a system with expansion flexibility is important. Appreciate your advice. John RE: NAS for two camera home security (one being a doorbell) - ed - 01-17-2025 Thank you for reaching out! A Synology NAS paired with Surveillance Station is a great choice for home security, and it's excellent that you're considering future expandability. Let’s break down your requirements and provide a recommendation: Key Requirements Surveillance Station Compatibility: Support for at least two cameras to start, with room for more in the future. Ability to manage live feeds and recordings efficiently. Expandable System: Flexibility to add more cameras, storage, or other NAS functionality later. Budget: Approximately $1,500, including NAS, HDDs, and cameras. Recommended NAS Models 1. Synology DS423+ Price: ~$500 Why Choose It? 4-bay NAS with an Intel Celeron quad-core CPU and 2GB RAM (expandable to 6GB). Perfect for running Surveillance Station with 2-4 cameras. Great for home use and future expandability. 2. Synology DS723+ Price: ~$600 Why Choose It? 2-bay NAS with AMD Ryzen R1600 CPU, powerful enough for 2-4+ cameras. Expandable via DX517 (5-bay expansion unit) for future storage growth. Includes M.2 NVMe slots for caching or storage pool (if upgraded). 3. Synology DS923+ (Best for Long-Term Growth) Price: ~$700 Why Choose It? 4-bay NAS with Ryzen R1600 CPU and expandability to 9 bays with DX517. Ideal for running multiple cameras and other NAS services like file backups or media streaming. HDD Recommendations For 8TB usable storage, use the following in RAID 1 (mirrored): 2 x 8TB HDDs (e.g., Seagate IronWolf or WD Red Plus): ~$300. Offers redundancy for data safety. Add more drives later to expand capacity. Camera Recommendations 1. Doorbell Camera Amcrest AD410 (Wi-Fi): ~$150 Works with ONVIF and integrates with Surveillance Station. High-quality 2K video and wide field of view. 2. Wi-Fi Camera Reolink RLC-511WA: ~$100 5MP resolution, supports ONVIF, and integrates seamlessly with Surveillance Station. Example Budget Breakdown Item Cost Synology DS423+ $500 2 x 8TB HDDs $300 Amcrest AD410 Doorbell $150 Reolink RLC-511WA $100 Total $1,050 Why These Recommendations? Scalability: Both the DS423+ and DS923+ offer excellent flexibility for adding cameras or storage. Cost-Effective Cameras: Amcrest and Reolink cameras provide solid performance at reasonable prices. Future-Proofing: Room to expand your NAS and camera network as your needs evolve. |
