Advice on NAS for multiple families - Enquiries - 01-08-2025

Hi,

Wanting to set up a solution for my own family and extended family (parents, sister and sister's family). Looking to replace our cloud subscriptions.

Here are our main priorities:
- File/Photo/Video Backup
- Good software for the above, particularly photo/video management/search
- Offsite backup (2 locations, at least)
- Good online access
- Expandability (there are 8 children in total, some of whom will become adults soon)
- Small business use (though less important as I use Onedrive)
- Possible media (video editing) backup in future

The last two points are less important.

From the research I've done, it seems like Synology is the best option (best software). And probably having two NASes in two locations. Is having the same NAS in both places necessary or beneficial? I'm wondering if I can have one as the main NAS (e.g., the DS423 (not +) looks like a suitable option for us in terms of price/spec) and something simpler as backup. Keen to hear your recommendations. Thanks.

Thank you for your message! Setting up a NAS system for multiple families and potentially small business use is a great idea, especially for replacing cloud subscriptions. Here’s my recommendation:

Primary NAS (Main Storage and Features)
For your main NAS, the Synology DS423+ is ideal given your priorities for photo/video management, expandability, and software capabilities.

Why DS423+?
Excellent Synology DSM software with tools like Synology Photos for AI-driven photo/video management and search.
Expandability with up to 72TB using 4 x 18TB drives.
Sufficient power for family backups, media streaming, and file sharing.
Future-proofing for small business use or potential media editing backups.
Drive Recommendation:

Start with 3 x 10TB WD Red Plus or Seagate IronWolf drives in SHR or RAID5 for redundancy and ~20TB usable space.
Leave one bay free for future expansion.
Secondary NAS (Offsite Backup)
For the secondary location, you can opt for a simpler and more affordable NAS. The Synology DS223 or DS423 (non-Plus) are good options.

Why DS223 or DS423?
Handles offsite backups reliably via Synology Hyper Backup or Snapshot Replication.
Cost-effective while still supporting Synology’s ecosystem for seamless syncing.
Drive Recommendation:

Use 2 x 10TB drives in RAID1 for redundancy.
Benefits of Matching NAS Systems
Having both NAS devices from Synology simplifies syncing and management:

Seamless Backup: Use Hyper Backup for scheduled backups from the primary to the secondary NAS.
Online Access: Utilize QuickConnect or Synology Drive for secure remote access.
Expandability: Both systems support additional storage as your needs grow.
Additional Considerations
Networking:
For better online access, ensure both locations have stable internet and consider upgrading to 2.5GbE-compatible routers or switches.
UPS:
Protect your investment with UPS devices like the APC BR1000MS to prevent data loss during power outages.
Budget Allocation:
Primary NAS + Drives: ~$1,500 AUD.
Secondary NAS + Drives: ~$700–900 AUD.
This keeps you within the $2,000 AUD budget.
Final Thoughts
The DS423+ and DS223/DS423 combination provides an excellent balance of performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency. This setup meets your family’s needs for backups, media management, and offsite redundancy while leaving room for future expansion.
