NAS upgrade - Enquiries - 11-26-2024 Hello, I actually own a Asustor AS5202T and 1 extenion unit that I use as mainly as movies storage with HDD in RAID1. I want to upgrade for a new NAS I'm actually looking for the new Lokerstor 10 gen 3 that is about to be released. I need at least a 10 HDD bays NAS I don't need HDMI output, I use a dedicated media player Graphic card is not a high priority, I don't use plex right now I need a 10G ethernet I might use it for home assistant in the futur pros : easy migration / I already own an extension for the future cons : ? Is there another option I should look at that will be better ? Thank you, Lugburzguul RE: NAS upgrade - ed - 11-28-2024 The Asustor Lockerstor 10 Gen 3 is a solid choice if you're already familiar with Asustor and have an extension unit. It's a strong candidate for your needs, but there are some other options worth considering, especially if you want the best future-proofing and flexibility for upgrades like adding a GPU. Pros of the Lockerstor 10 Gen 3: Easy Migration: Since you're already using an Asustor system, migrating your data will be smoother. 10G Ethernet: Future-proof connectivity for faster transfer speeds, which is crucial for your large storage needs. Expansion: You have the option to easily add an extension unit if you need more storage down the line. Cons: Limited software flexibility: Asustor's software ecosystem isn’t as feature-rich or polished as some of the competition, like Synology or QNAP. No ECC RAM support: For long-term data integrity and reliability, ECC RAM support is a big plus. The Lockerstor series doesn’t offer this. Potential future upgradeability limitations: While the system is solid, certain features (like future CPU upgrades) are not as flexible compared to other high-end NAS models. Alternative Recommendations: QNAP TS-73A or TS-74 Series: These models are fantastic choices if you're looking for expandability and future-proofing. They offer 10G Ethernet and PCIe slots for adding a GPU or other expansion cards (like additional network cards or even NVMe storage). They are equipped with a powerful AMD Ryzen CPU, making them suitable for tasks like gaming, virtualization, or media transcoding if you plan to run demanding applications. The QTS or QuTS Hero software offers a robust feature set, including virtual machines, Docker support, and extensive network options. |
