NAS - Enquiries - 11-24-2024

Good evening. First of all, I admit that I know absolutely nothing about NAS, how I could make a NAS at home, settings, etc. But I have an online seedbox (set on someone) in which I download files from trackee, which I keep at seed for ration). To be able to watch a movie downloaded on seedbox, I must first download the file to the computer, then transfer it to a stick and only then be able to watch it on TV. To get rid of these steps and honestly, I'm tired of them, I'd like to buy a synology NAS with which I can do these steps and watch the movie quietly on TV, without those intermediate steps. I saw the model 423+ and 224+. I watched all day on YouTube and I don't know which one to choose. I saw that upgrades can be made to both models, but also that due to the price difference between them, I can buy an 8TB hdd. I don't know if 423+ is over 224+. Or if for what I want, 224+ is enough, having a fairly low price compared to the others. Could you help me make the right choice.

Thank you for reaching out with your question. Based on your use case, it sounds like you want a solution that allows you to stream movies directly to your TV from a NAS, without needing to go through multiple steps like downloading to a computer or transferring files to a USB stick. Both the Synology DS423+ and DS224+ are great models, but there are a few key differences that might help guide your decision.

Synology DS423+ vs DS224+
Synology DS423+: This model is more powerful than the DS224+, with a quad-core processor and more RAM (2GB, expandable to 6GB). The DS423+ is better for tasks like streaming high-resolution videos and running apps like Plex smoothly. It also offers more flexibility for expansion in the future if you want to add more storage or upgrade the system. If you want a future-proof setup and plan to use the NAS for more demanding tasks, the DS423+ would be a good investment.

Synology DS224+: While this model is cheaper, it still offers great performance for media streaming and general file storage. It has a dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM, which is sufficient for smaller-scale usage. If your main goal is to stream movies to your TV and you don’t plan to expand or add more features in the near future, the DS224+ would likely be enough. The lower price would also allow you to invest in an 8TB hard drive, which is great for storage.

Which One Should You Choose?
If you don’t need much expansion and are mainly looking to stream media, the DS224+ will serve you well, especially if you want to save some money on the NAS itself and use it for basic media and file storage.

However, if you think you might want to use your NAS for other purposes later on, like more complex media management or backup solutions, the DS423+ would offer more future-proofing. The price difference is not huge, and it could be worth the extra investment if you plan to keep the NAS for several years.

Final Recommendation
Since you have a budget of around 1,000 Euros, both models are within your price range, but if you prioritize saving money and don't need extensive features just yet, the DS224+ would be a more cost-effective choice for your current needs. However, if you want more power and longevity in your setup, the DS423+ is worth considering for its extra features.
