NAS Advice for home - Enquiries - 11-17-2024

Hello,

I need advice on choosing a NAS for home use. I want to use Plex for movie streaming, to store my file documents from my computer, and to photos and videos from my iPhone.

Thanks in advance.

For a 50TB NAS with a 1500 Euro budget, here are some recommendations that would fit your needs for Plex, file storage, and photos/videos:

Synology DS923+

Pros: Easy to set up, excellent Plex support, great software ecosystem (DSM), and supports 4 bays with an expansion unit for a total of 9. It supports up to 64TB in total storage if you expand it, which should fit your needs.
Cons: You may need to factor in additional storage costs for the 50TB target.
QNAP TS-453D

Pros: Has 4 bays, good for media streaming (Plex), supports 2.5GbE networking, and expandable with an M.2 SSD cache for faster performance.
Cons: Slightly more technical to set up compared to Synology, but offers great flexibility.
Asustor AS5304T

Pros: Great value, 4 bays with a user-friendly interface, supports Plex, and has 2.5GbE networking. It’s a good option for budget-conscious users while still offering good performance.
Cons: Software ecosystem not as extensive as Synology, but still solid.
For the storage part, you will need to factor in the cost of drives. Assuming you’re going for 12TB drives (which is a good balance between cost and capacity), you would need 5 drives for 50TB. Look at brands like Seagate IronWolf or WD Red for NAS-compatible drives.

This setup should work well for both your home movie streaming and file storage needs.
