Routers/switches - Enquiries - 01-21-2024

I am going to purchase the QNAP TS-664 with 6 WD Red 22TB to use as my Plex server. I plan to have the drive in my room so it is closer to my computer to add files to it. My modem is in the living room and i was wondering the best router/switch to run from my room to the modem? Also should I use CAT5, 6, or 7 cables?

Hey! Exciting times with your upcoming QNAP TS-664 setup! For the connection between your room and the living room modem, I'd recommend a reliable Gigabit Ethernet switch. The NETGEAR GS308 is a solid choice for a switch, offering enough ports for your NAS, computer, and any other devices you might want to connect. As for the cables, CAT6 should be more than sufficient for Gigabit speeds, providing a good balance between performance and cost. CAT7 is overkill for most home setups unless you're planning for future upgrades beyond Gigabit speeds. So, CAT6 cables should keep things running smoothly for your Plex server. If you have any more questions, feel free to shoot them over! Cheers!
