Homelab - NAS - Enquiries - 12-04-2023

Looking for advice, i have an old desktop, and a few 500gb-2tb drives. I want to learn/practice: Proxmox vs Trunas Scale. I know i can run Trunas inside of Proxmox, but do i need to? Proxmox isn't a great NAS solution, but should i go baremetal with trunas or ??

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Absolutely, for your setup and learning goals, I'd recommend going with TrueNAS installed directly rather than running it within a VM on Proxmox. While Proxmox is excellent for virtualization, TrueNAS performs optimally on bare metal, especially when you're focusing on honing your NAS skills. This setup allows you to fully explore TrueNAS capabilities and understand its performance in a dedicated environment. If you ever decide to delve deeper into virtualization later on, you can always explore integrating Proxmox alongside or separate from your TrueNAS setup. Happy learning!
